However, the story of the city is one that defines the Industrial Revolution in the 20th century. The city was founded in 1887 by Captain William H. Hardy as the endpoint of his Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. In 1902, Captain Joseph T. Jones took control of the railroad, and he and his family began to develop the area into a harbor and city. After World War II, the city became known for its esteemed resorts, enhanced by one of the world’s largest man-made beaches, as it continues for 26 miles!
